The trailer gives a new look at Berk, Hiccup’s home base, with recognizable locations like arenas and forests from the original film. While many visual aspects have been updated, the dragon designs remain true to the animation. Toothless is instantly recognizable, but with added details that should enhance the realistic look. Gerard Butler returns as Stoick , this time in full Viking garb, while Nico Parker (Dumbo, The Last of Us) plays Astrid.

The film largely follows the story of the 2010 animated classic, but looks to have a grittier tone and more realistic visuals. In addition to Hiccup and Toothless, Astrid and the eccentric blacksmith Gobber (Nick Frost) also play important roles. According to the DreamWorks synopsis, the film is about overcoming fear and forging peace, with the bond between Hiccup and Toothless being crucial.

DreamWorks announced the live-action remake in 2023, with Dean DeBlois, co-director of the original, attached to write, produce and direct. The production team includes Marc Platt (La La Land) and Adam Siegel (Drive).

The live-action How to Train Your Dragon will be released in June 2025. In addition to this remake, Disney is also working on many realistic versions of their classics, such as Lilo and Stitch.
